Childhood Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome Remains a Concern

Investigating the Causes and Risks

The multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), also known as pediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome, is a rare but potentially serious condition that can occur in children a few weeks after they have been infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the virus that causes COVID-19.

In the early days of the pandemic, MIS-C was a major concern, as it could lead to serious complications, including organ failure and even death. However, a new study from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) suggests that MIS-C is becoming more rare each year.

The study, which was published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics, looked at data from more than 2,000 children who were hospitalized with MIS-C in the United States between March 2020 and December 2022. The researchers found that the incidence of MIS-C declined significantly over the course of the pandemic, from 1.4 cases per 100,000 children in 2020 to 0.6 cases per 100,000 children in 2022.

The researchers also found that the risk of MIS-C was higher in children who were younger, who had underlying medical conditions, and who were infected with the Delta or Omicron variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

The study's findings are reassuring, as they suggest that MIS-C is becoming less common as the pandemic continues. However, the researchers caution that MIS-C remains a serious condition, and that more research is needed to understand the causes and risks of the syndrome.
